From China (9)

Tuesday 16 April pm
This evening we visited the very impressive Xian city walls.   They're virtually completely intact, but I read that they have been "recently restored" which may go some way to explaining why they're in such good condition.   They form a rectangle with a perimeter of nearly 14 km.   Although they're rammed earth inside, externally they're brick-faced, and are complete with fortress-like gates, watchtowers etc.

Dinner was a "dumpling banquet"  (dumplings of numerous shapes and sizes, and all sorts of fillings) and was followed by a performance of music and dance from the Tang era - very colourful and quite entertaining.
